How Silvia and Sergio Escaped Political Persecution and Built a New Life in the U.S.

When Silvia and Sergio came to the United States, they were fleeing a dangerous reality: government-led political persecution in Venezuela. As outspoken citizens who disagreed with their country’s leadership, they faced constant threats, roadblocks to obtaining basic documentation like passports, and the looming fear of violence — even death — at the hands of the government. “Thinking differently makes us vulnerable” Silvia explained. “Many people have been killed by the government for dissent.”

But thanks to the work of our legal team, Silvia and Sergio's story took a hopeful turn.

Winning Asylum for the Whole Family

In a recent court hearing conducted via video conference, Silvia and Sergio were granted asylum — not only for themselves, but for their entire family. The judge, moved by their testimony and the documented evidence of widespread political repression in Venezuela, recognized the legitimacy of their fears and approved their asylum case.

The moment the judge said, "Welcome to the United States," Silvia described feeling an “immense joy and relief that’s hard to describe.” The couple credited the win to the collaborative, professional, and dedicated efforts of our team:

“It was a team thing, it was a mutual thing… perseverance, dedication, professionalism,” said Silvia. “We are extremely grateful.”

A Fresh Start and a Brighter Future

Now living in the U.S., Silvia and Sergio are enjoying a sense of peace, stability, and opportunity they hadn’t experienced in years. Above all, they made the difficult journey for their daughter, Antonella, hoping to give her a better life — and they’re already seeing that dream come true.

“She’s thriving here” Silvia shared. “We make sure she’s active, learning, and grounded in strong values.” Sergio added, “Here, we just follow the law — and the quality of life is excellent.”

Advice for Other Immigrants

For those thinking of leaving their country and starting anew, Silvia and Sergio urge others to:

  • Act with humility and dedication.
  • Seek qualified legal help early.
  • Respect the laws of the country that welcomes you.
  • Be strong, have faith, and trust that your efforts will be rewarded.

“This is a tremendous change” said Silvia. “Your lives are going to change completely.”

Words to the World

To those in the U.S. unfamiliar with the immigrant journey, Sergio offered this reflection:

“Many people think immigrants come illegally, but the truth is… we’re families looking for safety, dignity, and a future. We have moments of weakness, but we support each other — and do everything we can to do things right.”

If you or someone you love is living in fear or facing persecution, you’re not alone — and there is hope. Just like Silvia and Sergio, you deserve the chance to live in safety, rebuild your life, and protect your family’s future.
