Turn your two-year green card into ten
We help couples file Form I-751 on time, inside the 90-day window, with the evidence USCIS needs to approve your permanent green card.

Your card has an expiration date. Here's what it means.
If you got your green card through a marriage that was less than two years old, USCIS gave you a conditional green card. It looks like any other green card, but it expires two years after it was issued, and the date printed on it is a deadline, not a renewal reminder. To keep your status, you and your spouse file Form I-751 before that date, and USCIS replaces the two-year card with a ten-year one.
The full process, the evidence, and the interview are covered on our removal of conditions page. This page is about the deadline itself: how to count it, what to do depending on how much time you have left, and what happens once the petition is in.
How to count your 90-day window
A joint I-751 petition has to reach USCIS inside the 90 days before the expiration date on your card. Not postmarked, received. Say your card expires June 30, 2027. Count back 90 days and you land on April 1, 2027. You can file any day from April 1 through June 30. Mail it on March 25 and USCIS will send it back, and the time it spends in the mail does not count in your favor. Our article on when to file the I-751 petition goes deeper on the math.
If you have ninety days, thirty days, or none
Ninety days
This is the comfortable case. Use the time to gather evidence that spans the whole marriage: the lease or mortgage, joint accounts, insurance, tax returns, photos, and letters from people who know you as a couple. A file that covers two years convincingly is the difference between an approval on paper and an interview. Our I-751 evidence checklist shows what that looks like.
Thirty days
File on time with the evidence you have. If the petition is thin, USCIS will usually send a request for evidence after it is accepted, and you answer that with the documents you did not have time to gather. What USCIS cannot do is give you back the deadline. A thinner petition that arrives in the window beats a perfect one that arrives late.
None
If the date has passed and nothing was filed, your conditional status ended on that date. You can still file, but the petition has to include a written explanation of why it is late, and USCIS decides whether to accept it. Without a petition on file, USCIS can refer you to immigration court. This is not a situation to handle on your own. Hire a lawyer before you do anything else.
What happens after you file
USCIS mails a receipt notice that extends your conditional green card for 48 months. Keep it with your expired card. Together they prove your status for work, for travel back into the United States, and in most states for renewing a driver's license. USCIS will schedule fingerprints, review the file, and either approve the petition, ask for more evidence, or call you both in for an interview. Your ten-year card arrives in the mail after approval.
Two mistakes that cost people their status
The first is filing the wrong form. A two-year card is not renewed on Form I-90, and filing one does nothing to stop the clock. Our article on green card renewal versus removal of conditions explains the difference.
The second is assuming that a separation, a divorce, or a spouse who won't sign means you can't file. You can, on your own, with a waiver, and the 90-day window does not apply to a waiver petition. Our I-751 waiver page covers each situation.
How we handle an expiring card
We start with the date on your card and work backward, so you know the first day you can file and the last. Then we build the strongest petition the calendar allows, file it inside the window, and answer anything USCIS asks for afterward. If your date has already passed, what happens next depends on your situation, and we will tell you where you stand before anything is filed.
